Al-Hilal is one of the most successful football clubs in Saudi Arabia. It was founded on October 16, 1957, originally as Al-Olympy. In December 1958, by royal decree from King Saud, the club was renamed Al-Hilal.
In 1961, Al-Hilal won its first major trophy by claiming the King's Cup. Another triumph in this prestigious competition followed in 1964 when they defeated Al-Ittihad in the final after a penalty shootout.
The rivalry between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, known as "El Clasico of Saudi Arabia," is one of the most exciting in Saudi football. These two clubs represent the country's biggest cities—Riyadh (Al-Hilal) and Jeddah (Al-Ittihad).
